Diane Hallstrom

A native Oregonian, Diane grew up in a household full of exploration, creativity, encouragement, love and possibilities. Her father was a professional photographer who shared his love and knowledge of photography, and her mother was always saying, “Girls can do anything.” A mere photograph and encouragement travels a long way.

At a liberal arts college, Diane majored in Economics and studied Art History, ancient to modern. She learned she appreciated classical painting and loved modern abstracts for spontaneity and quirkiness. The attraction to abstracts was rooted in her love of the manipulations her father created in the darkroom, especially solarization and polarization. She actually snuck a solarized picture of her parents to college and proudly displayed it in her dorm room.

After marrying Jim and working in business for years, they moved to a farm near Eugene where she followed her lifelong passion for horses while meeting the challenge of aging parents. As their parents aged, Diane began painting. She soon learned she was passionate about painting acrylic abstracts. Diane wasn’t a good painter at that time, but she was definitely passionate about painting. As she learned through self-study, workshops and classes, she started successfully showing and entering contests. Her paintings improved. Her passion grew.

After a trip to Jackson and Cody WY, Diane decided to paint landscapes and western themed paintings in oil. She enjoyed the challenge, although she wondered if she had the patience to paint realistically. She soon learned painting in oil teaches patience or it breaks you. Fortunately, she learned patience.

Jim and Diane moved to the Sisters area in 2020. Diane joined the Sisters Arts Association and she is looking forward to taking part in art events in the community and meeting local artists.
