J. Chester Armstrong

J. Chester “Skip” Armstrong was born in1948 in northern California. He graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in philosophy. As a natural seeker of truth, he traveled extensively, looking for the meaning of life. Eventually, this led him toward carving as a basic and organic means of expression. 

A self-taught artist, he has been sculpting professionally since 1974. He considers himself a student by natural inclination of the classical form, seeking the perfect shape. He describes his style as “stylized realism,” with an emphasis on fluid lines and movement.

He uses woods native to the Pacific Northwest: pine, maple, juniper, and black walnut. His theme is the magic of animals in motion. He says, “I love the simple integrity of woodcarving. The result is an original work of art, unique to the tree itself, and the moment of inspiration. No two are alike.”

Skip’s process is dramatic: chainsaws, chisels, grinders, and sandpaper – all rising to the moment of truth. Skip’s carving can be found in private collections, museums and on church doors around the country. Notable collectors include Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Olivia Newton John, and Nick Nolte.
